Author Details:
Peter Milward is an English Jesuit who specialised in the classics and English literature at Oxford University. Since coming to Japan in 1954, he has taught English literature and Western culture, with emphasis on the plays of Shakespeare, at Sophia University, Tokyo. Thus he has been actively concerned with university education for the past sixty years. He is at present Professor Emeritus of Sophia University and Director of the Renaissance Institute, Tokyo. He is author of several authoritative books published in England and America on Shakespeare’s Religious Background, Religious Controversies in the Elizabethan Age, Religious Controversies in the Jacobean Age, Biblical Influences in Shakespeare’s Great Tragedies, Landscape and Inscape (on Hopkins) and A Commentary on the Sonnets of G.M.Hopkins. Most of his books, however, have been published for university students in Japan.
